So can we call gay people queer again?
I'm confused - having spent years teaching myself to use the term gay (as an adjective or noun) meaning homosexual, as anything else was too insulting, I now find a series on "queer art" on the BBC, with many of the presenters referring to themselves as queer.

My nephew asked be a couple of weeks ago why we use people of colour to describe non whites, but people get upset if you say coloured, I had no answer.

Re: So can we call gay people queer again?
This could be a trap.

'Queer' might not mean 'homosexual' anymore.

In the same sort of arena (identity politics) but not actually 'homosexual'. There's scope to get this very wrong if you're not careful. I get the impression they like it that way.

Re: So can we call gay people queer again?
'Gay' means homosexual. 'Queer' is an umbrella term, which has recently been 'reclaimed', to cover gay, bi, or other non-mainstream sexualities. So a BBC documentary on 'queer art' may have artists who are gay, but not exclusively. The word 'queer' has had somewhat of a renaissance, as the term 'LGBTQA+' no longer has the same ring to it, and no one can remember all the letters they're supposed to say.

Straight people should still use 'gay' to describe gay people. You can use 'queer' to generally talk about queer culture, queer history, etc. It would be inappropriate however to call someone queer, unless they describe themselves as such.

On behalf of the LGBTQIAP+ community, we now expect you to get this right every time. Thanks.

You can do ANYTHING, so long as you "Identify as..."

Re: So can we call gay people queer again?
I thought that "gay", when it was first applied to sexual behaviour, meant "unrepressed".

I checked this out on Wikipedia, and found that I was more or less right.

Re: So can we call gay people queer again?
I don't know but I am sure the number of 'queers' has increased since it became a successful PR exercise to brand 'queers' as 'gay'.

As a marketing man I have to say their campaign has been immense and well done to all the 'queers' that are now 'gays'.

However I do feel sad when I read some classic authors that wrote something along the lines of "John was feeling a little gay...."

It takes on a whole new meaning when 'queers' worked well for me. That'll upset quite a few WHO posters but no-one gives a fcuk except 'queers' or 'gays'.

Re: So can we call gay people queer again?
Mind you, language changes extremely rapidly.

'LGBTQA+' became 'LGBTQIAP+' before di_k could finish his post.

No wonder it's difficult to keep up

Chiggers

I tend to avoid modern terminology, can become all rather confusing

I remain rather partial to a time served raving fucking bender, not a raving fucking bender, the term you understand - devoid of all ambiguity and sufficiently broad netted enough to account for the various non binary, cock chopping off weirdos of current times

Splendid variant of the time served raving bender
